The dried root is the strongest natural, hair – blending agent. The effect is accumulative and the color becomes softer and gold with each application. Drying the hair in the sun intensifies the lightening action, giving a rich, Titian, golden color. A golden hair dye is made as follows. Prepare a strong decoction by simmering root in water for 20 minutes. Then allow steeping for several hours. This can be used as a rinse, catching the liquid and repeating the rinse action until the color fades from the liquid. A more effective dye is achieved by making a paste. Add ½ cup kaolin powder (or Fuller’s earth) to 1 cup of the decoction. Add 1 tsp (5ml) of cider vinegar to maintain the hair’s acid mantle and 1 tsp (5ml) glycerin to prevent hair becoming dry. Wheat gloves as rhubarb root stains and apply paste evenly throughout the hair. Leave on up to an hour and rinse well or let it dry on the hair and brush out later.
