They like it. And if you are wise you will like it. There are good reasons why you should. First, you may learn from it. (No man is such a fool that the wisest cannot learn from him.) Secondly, they like talking and will like you for listening to them. Thirdly, it is more restful to let them do most of the work involved in social intercourse.

You’ll find that John Jones is more interested in a boil on his neck than your earthquake in Africa. He is only human after all. (Just like you!) Even if the other fellow is a bit of a bore, let him talk. A few moments complaisance is a small price for continued goodwill.
