John Wilkes, M.P. in George the Third’s reign, was of odious private character. He was also repulsively ugly. Yet he was universally popular. He boasted that no woman could resist his seductions and blandishments.
Asked how he did it: “By compliments and consideration and gallantry. I make her feel that she is the most beautiful and important of her sex,” he declared.
People need appreciation for their ego as much as food for their body or ideas for their mind. Remember: Your social popularity, your promotion, your income depend to a large extent on your success in dealing with people. Above all things, cultivate their goodwill.
