Crude flattery is of limited use. (Yet it is surprising how many people can and do swallow the crudest flattery with the greatest pleasure). You must find out a person’s weakness and play on that. You need not flatter. But like Charles Schwab the American millionaire steel – magnate who boasted of his ability to “keep sweet” all sorts and conditions of employees even if underpaid and overworked: “Be hearty in your approbation and lavish in your praise”. Why not? It costs you nothing. It contents—and pleases a lot. It is a chep price to pay for people’s good will, friendship and practical help in life. The late Lord Hewart, Lord Chief Justice of England, could never resist the advocacy of the then Norman Birkett (now Lord Justice Birkett). Once after dinner, he told why. “ I cannot resist Birkett,” he said. “I like him too much”.
