A spray of essential oils can kill bacteria, fungi and viruses to varying degrees in the air. Research was undertaken by a Dr.Chamberland in 1887 on the antiseptic powers of vaporized essential oils, particularly on the anthrax bacillus. He found antiemetic potency (the ability to combat the development of germs and kill them) in decreasing order in: lemon, thyme, orange, bergamot, juniper, clove, citronella, lavender, niaouli, peppermint, rosemary, sandalwood, eucalyptus, and Chinese anise. This list corresponds with the respective terrene strength contained in each. They were most powerful against meningococcal, staphylococcus, and the typhus bacillus. Diphtheria bacillus was more resistant and sadly the spores of anthrax bacillus were not affected at all.
