Turmeric increases the liver’s ability to perform its two main functions; to metabolize or break down all the food and drugs we consume into a form usable by the body and to gather toxins from the body for elimination. It is useful for indigestion because it increases the secretion of digestive fluids. Turmeric enhances these actions in the short term but over a prolonged period of time, or if used to excess, it may over stimulate the liver and upset metabolic processes. Chinese practitioners use a variety of turmeric to treat liver disease up to and including liver cancer.
