The system of Asclepius was practiced in Greece for several hundred years and there are temple remains at Goes, Athens and, the most famous, at Epidaurus. Some of his ideas continue today in therapy centers and health resorts. The inspirational aspect of science is again represented in the work of philosopher and mathematician Pythagoras whose ideas on harmony, theorems of geometry and discoveries about the vibrations of sound were the result of meditation. In the sixth century BC, Pythagoras set up a university to teach the key to universal harmony, both natural and social. Herbs played an important part in the cleansing and restorative routing which preceded advanced learning. Poultices were the favorite method of applying herbs to create a longer, continuous contact with the plants. Pythagoras is said to have held the medical properties of the sea onion in such high regard that he wrote an entire volume on the subject. Herbs were also used in the special high energy food mixture created for his long sojourns alone for contemplation. Poppy and sesame seeds, sea onion skin, daffodil flowers and mallow leaves were mixed in a paste of barely and peas.
