What can you do to build good relationships? One very important factor is showing a respect for the other person’s time. When you call, for instance, be prepared. Say what you need to and don’t keep the person on the phone too long. In addition, remember to say “thank you” if you get help, whether it was successful or not. “Thanks for trying” Can make someone more amenable to try again. Finally don’t be a pig. Learning to ask is important but prioritizes your needs and ask only for what’s necessary. Free tickets to a gig can wait if you know that person can hook you up with someone who can help your career.
