People are always coming to me for advice on how get singed to a record label. Sometimes they’re so confused by what others tell them they can’t make good decisions for themselves. Everyone in the music industry has an opinion. Ask five different industry people how to approach a specific situation and you may get five conflicting points of view. It’s hard to know who to pay attention to. Trying everything can set you up for what I call the yo-yo effect, being yanked back and forth as you’re advised to “do this” so you rush to try it. Then someone else recommends another option and you hurry to try that too. Heeding everyone’s advice can get exhausting and frustrating, with little getting accomplished. You can burn yourself out by expending all of your energy the wrong advice.
