When I made my first rap cut, the kids in school were sold. I got nicknamed “The Rappin’ Teach” and picked up a lot of media attention. But still no deal, I didn’t have a clue then what I was doing. The kids thought I was good and were furious when they heard how people jerked me around. This is a heck of an industry. Many insiders will tell you anything you want to hear at that moment so you’ll kiss up to them. At first I kissed, so desperate was I to learn what to do, and to get the record deal I felt was deserved. But the people in industry sent me a message that no one believed a white woman could succeed in rap, even though they knew I was good.
