Hypertension in pregnancy may be due to coincidental essential hypertension to per-existing renal disease or may be directly related to the pregnancy. In the latter instance the conditions are referred to as preemptive or ecliptic toxemia of pregnancy. Frequent changes of posture, encouragement to breathe deeply and to cough should be instituted together with oxygen, antibiotics and if necessary drugs such as thalidomide, lobe line or caffeine sodium benzine to stimulate respiration.
