Prompt and though treatment of any pulmonary infection is very important and is frequently the most efficacious factor in treating the cardiac failure.
Bronchodilators should be given when airway obstruction is present. Aerosols may be useful
Health Oxygen is indicated if central cyanosis is present with congestive failure but caution is necessary because cerebral symptoms and even coma can result from carbon dioxide retention.
Diuretics should be given as with all forms of cardiac failure but digitalis is relatively ineffective.
Venesection may help if polycythaemia is present.
Morphine in particular and other sedatives must be used with great caution owing to their action in depressing the respiratory centre.
