Hi, the pain threshold is the level of the intensity of a stimulus necessary to produce pain in our health. It seems likely that alterations of pain threshold in the gastrointestinal tract can occur so that stimuli which are usually painless become painful. These alterations of threshold might be produced by inflammatory change; an analogous example when the surface of the body is inflamed is the hyperalgesia of sunburn. If the sensitivity of the stomach to stimuli is largely dependent on the degree of inflammation present, this alteration in threshold might explain alterations of ulcer pain which occur without alteration in the size of the ulcer niche, or in the amount or quality of gastric secretion. Thanks Guys.
