With adequate treatment the disease subsides rapidly. Fever, Pain, frequency and distrait disappear in a day or two. The urine usually becomes sterile within a few days.
In some cases, although the acute symptoms subside, a low-grade infection may purist, and the disease may pass into the chronic stage. In view of the frequency of acute pyelonephritis, the curable nature of the condition and the fact the chronic phelonephritis is a common cause of renal failure and hypertension, the importance of adequate treatment of the acute stage cannot be overstressed.
