How appointments are made, how much time you’ll have during a visit, whether the doctor is available on the phone to answer questions. Ask about health hospital affiliations, what other doctors he or she is associated with, and how emergencies are handled. Whom can you call when doctor is off? Be sure to get specific answers to these questions. Ask how the doctor feels about your getting second opinions. Some physicians feel defensive when patients appear to question their decisions; others understand and welcome this practice.
