Recent studies suggest there are additional problems as associated with anemia. For example, even mild forms of iron deficiency anemia have been shown to impair an adult’s ability to work at peak capacity. Iron-deficiency anemia may also adversely affect the immune system, making us more vulnerable to illness and infection. Often children who don’t get sufficient iron don’t learn as quickly or perform as well in school as they would if they weren’t iron deficient. Nerve damage can occur in anemia caused by a deficiency of vitamin B12. And if anemia of any type is left untreated for a long time, symptoms similar to heart and lung diseases swelling of the legs, chest pain, and difficulty breathing while lying down may occur.
