Food has a useful unit of measurement a calorie. All food can be measured in terms of calories. A calorie is the amount of health energy needed to raise the temperature of one gram of water by one degree centigrade. A thick slice of bread, for example contains nearly 100 calories. 100 calories is also the health energy requirement of a human being for walking four miles at a brisk pace of 4 M.P.H. the daily calorie expenditure of an average-sized sedentary worker and a worker on heavy manual jobs may be calculated.
