A tall tree unto 36 m in height, cultivated or occasionally found self-sown in some parts of India. Trunk covered with persistent bases of petioles, the base usually surrounded by a mass of offshoots or suckers, leaves in open crown, pinnate, unto 5 m. long, grayish green: pinnate 20-40 cm long, linear, keeled, lower pinnate modified into spines; flowers in branched spa dices, small, fruit an oblong berry, 2, 5-7, 5 cm long reddish or yellowish brown when ripe.
Dates are demulcent, expectorant & laxative and are used in respiratory diseases & fever. They are also reported to be used in cases of memory disturbance. Dates are powerful nutritious fruit, in anemia. It is aphrodisiac in nature. Dried dates soaked in milk are highly nutritious and gives vitality. Date is prescribed in asthma, chest complaint & cough. It is also useful in gonorrhea.
